Brooklands

Field number 66 on 1846 map. Brooklands Close.
In December 2002 this pasture was ploughed up for a new grass lay. This field contains the remains of an earthwork thought to be of medieval date. Preliminary work showed that in addition to the earthwork there were traces of post medieval occupation on the lower slope. A grid of three metre squares was set out and material collected. The finds indicated occupation from mid seventeenth through the first quarter of the eighteenth century. From c1650 to c.1680 it appears that pipes were also made on the site.

Very little was found in association with the earthwork which appeared to have been severely truncated by ploughing in the past. A very fine specimen pipe marked Ios Hughes was amongst the finds. This may be the work of Joseph Hughes recorded as a pipemaker at Much Wenlock in 1729.
