Clover Field

In the winter of 1995/6 this field went under the plough. George and Frances Yeats collected pipes and pottery from the plough soil. It was clearly overspill from a cottage site in the wood, now known as Monstay Rough. This site was still inhabited at the time of the Tithe map of 1845. The edge of the plough furrow was examined and a thin layer of pipe kiln waste recorded. This is clearly the source of much of the material collected which dates from c.1660-c.1700.

In March 2004, with the kind permission of Mr Smith of Burrington Farm, a 1.5m square evaluation trench was excavated. A total of 51 pipes were recovered, including pipes attributable to Clemen Melard who died in 1714. The pipe forms recovered suggest a terminal date for manufacture of 1690. Clemen also worked at the Roy's orchard site making pipes of the tailed heel form using a full name stamp suggesting a move between 1680 and 1700.
