The Croft

The Croft is the name given on the tithe map to one of several enclosures that have been swallowed up by the much larger Yapps field. The term croft implies an enclosure near or adjacent to a house site. There is also later map evidence for a building near by. The large field has been arable for many years and in July 1999 field walking brought to light a spread of domestic waste dating from mid seventeenth century into the nineteenth century. It is important as a record of a purely domestic assemblage including pipes made outside the parish after production here had ceased. Notable amongst these are stem marks of James and Thomas Gethin.
