Pipe Aston Farm

This site was discovered when the owners son dug out a series of hollows, piling the soil up to form switch backs for a Bmx cycle track. A number of pipes were found and on examination of the holes it was found that they came from a thin layer of pipe kiln waste about a foot below the turf. A shallow earthwork accentuated by a parch mark in the grass indicated a small enclosure had previously occupied the corner of the orchard. An evaluation trench 1 metre square was dug in April 2002 and a sample of the pipes recovered. The pipe forms included mid seventeenth century barrels, post restoration round heel cups and Tailed heels of the late seventeenth century. Stamps included five different rose and crowns a four petal floret and MH initials. Also recovered was a fine token, obverse depicting a ram encircled with the name WILL SHIPHEARD, reverse S WM encircled with IN KINGTON.
