Wig Curlers
Wig curlers or bigoudis are small objects made from pipe
clay used to curl hair for use
in wigs. They are common in late seventeenth century contexts
and continue in lesser number through to the nineteenth
century. Examples have been recovered in
Roy's Orchard
where they were probably made as a side line to the
production of clay tobacco
pipes.
Analysis of the clays used for both pipes and wig
curlers suggests a common source.
Two types of wig curler have been recovered;
the first with squared off round ends,
the second with concave ends.
