The Pipe Aston Project

Director : Dr Allan Peacey

Centred on Pipe Aston, this project is dedicated to the study of clay tobacco pipes and kilns in the north Herefordshire region of England.

A number of kilns were in operation here from as early as c.1630 to c.1750. Due to the rural nature of the area, there has been little disturbance of the sites since their abandonment.

At Roy's Orchard, building remains associated with the manufacture of clay tobacco pipes survive to within 30mm of the turf. The project attracted grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2000 and from The Countryside Agency in 2001.
