Open Day 2002
Each year as our excavation draws to a close,
we hold a public open day to display the results of our
efforts to any interested parties that choose to visit.
August 3rd 2002 the day chosen turned out to be a beautiful
sunny day, ideal for the constant stream of
visitors who were not only treated to conducted tours
of the excavation and shown displays of finds, but also
were able to see pipes being made by a professional
pipe maker. Many brought pipes for identification contributing
to the emerging picture of product distribution
in the surrounding hinterland.
All ages were represented with the younger children taking
part in bubble blowing whilst parents and grandparents plied our
members with questions. This year out most
distant visitors were Dr. Helmut Lohrer and his wife
Elizabeth and children Mirjam and Simon from the Black Forrest
in Germany, but on holiday in Pipe Aston.
